哈勃望远镜在2004年7月拍的小麦哲伦星系中的恒星形成区照片。明亮的蓝色的最近形成的恒星在恒星形成区的中心吹出一个空穴。这个区域的中心是星团NGC602，从炽热的年轻恒星发出的高能辐射雕塑出星云外壳的内边缘，并且慢慢向外吞食这些物质。照片中象鼻一样的尘埃柱指向这些热恒星，这些区域可能提供一些恒星如何在星团中心形成的线索，今天最年轻的恒星仍正在沿着这些尘埃脊（dust ridges）形成。
小麦哲伦星系在杜鹃座，距离地球约20万光年，是一个矮星系。
